Ravenna
Army Ammunition Plant's (RVAAP's) original mission was to produce munitions
and later to demilitarize them---those missions ended in 1992. Today, all
ammunition production and testing at RVAAP has ceased. RVAAP's current mission
is cleanup contamination from past activities. The Army’s mission follows the Installation Action Plan, a multiyear restoration program. The plan defines the proposed approach and the costs to conduct future investigations and cleanup actions at each potentially contaminated area at the installation. The plan must meet the requirements set by the federal Installation Restoration Program (IRP). This program investigates and, if necessary, cleans up former disposal and test areas, some of which were used before the disposal of chemicals was regulated or even fully understood. RVAAP started the IRP in 1989. Surveys
of RVAAP indicated 51 areas of potential contamination, based on the known
activities of those areas. Of those areas, 32 are under active investigation
under the IRP. Other sites are being considered under other programs,
and others require no further cleanup. |
